The Act relates to 'large shops' with an internal
sales floor area used for the sale and display of goods of
over 280 square metres.
The Act requires that such premises restrict their hours
of opening on a Sunday to a continuous period of 6 hours
between 10 am and 6 pm (ie 10am - 4pm, 11am - 5pm, 12noon -
6pm etc). It also prohibits them from opening on Easter
Sunday and Christmas Day when it falls on a Sunday. There
are certain exemptions in the Act such as any shop, which
is a registered pharmacy or any petrol filling station
etc.
If the premises has a building with an indoor sales
floor over 280 square metres then the whole of the premises
is caught by the Act. This means outdoor areas must also
comply with the same requirements of the Act. Smaller sized
shops are not restricted by the Act.
