Privacy Policy

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) is committed to protecting the privacy of everyone who uses any of it's electronic services. Any personal information by which you can be identified, such as your name, address, email etc, will be treated with the utmost care, in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act of 1998.

When using our electronic services, certain information is recorded. This information is used for statistical purposes, and aids us to continually improve our services. None of the information stored automatically by any of our electronic services is personal information, and does not in any way reveal your identity to our services.

RMBC will not sell, trade, or rent to third parties any of your personal information, nor will it be transferred to any Council system without your explicit consent. All personal information provided will only be used for the purpose for which it was intended.

Online Communication with the council can be conducted in several ways.

Rotherham Online
There are a number of forms on the www.rotherham.gov.uk service which request personal information, although you are not required to provide this information, it will assist us in communicating any responses to you. Any personal information provided will only be used for the intended purpose. There are several links that allow you to send email directly to council members, and the leader of the council. Although we have taken every precaution to secure the email service at RMBC, email in general is open to certain security risks, whereby unauthorised persons may be able to intercept the email before it reaches our systems. If you are concerned about these risks, we would suggest you use one of the online forms, or make your enquiry by telephone and speak to one of our operators at Rotherham Connect on 01709 336000.

RotherhamConnect web site
The role of the Rotherham Connect service www.rotherhamconnect.com is to provide an online facility to gain answers to Rotherham, and council related questions. This service provides both anonymous access (No personal information is required, or recorded), and an interactive service, that requires registration. To use the interactive service you must supply, a valid email address, a password to access the system, Title, Forename, Surname, 1 st Line of Address and the Town in which you live. By registering on Rotherham Connect you are able to track the progress of questions asked of the council, and have a full record of the communication. All personal information provided will only be used to contact you when you have asked the council a question via the Rotherham Connect service.

Online Payments
The online payments service
https://payments.rotherham.gov.uk requires the minimal amount of information needed to process the transaction. You will be asked to provide the reference number of the service you wish to pay (i.e Council Tax Reference Number), and your credit/debit card information. The service is encrypted, so any information that you send over the internet cannot be read by anyone other than our server. This service is protected by a BT Trustwise Verisign certificate, that assures secure connection to our service.

External Companies

There are a number of links to external companies/websites on RMBC's electronic services, these websites are those sites considered to be complementary to that of RMBC, but are not controlled by RMBC. Any personal data given to these sites is not covered by this policy, please ensure that you have read and understood the policy relevant to the web site you are entering your personal information on.

Public Access

When entering personal information, please ensure that you are in a suitable environment in which to do so. Rotherham offers many public access points which can be used to communicate electronically with the council services. Before typing personal information in public, please make sure that there is no one overlooking the computer you are using.
