Introduction
The Council’s Learning Disability Service has been recognised for its excellent practice by the Department for Communities and Local Government's Beacon Scheme. The Valuing People Beacon award highlighted that the service saw inclusion as the heart of its work, with their main focus being the things that really matter to people - having a voice, having my own home and having a job.
Rotherham’s strengths include:
- A commitment to the service from Councillors
- People with learning disabilities are represented and included at all levels within Rotherham Council, through forums such as the Learning Disabilities Partnership Board, the Peoples Forum and many more
- Person Centred Planning
- Provision of friendly information so that people are fully included, this takes the form of DVDs, leaflets and minutes of meetings in plain English.
- Highest funder of advocacy services in the country
- Excellent partnership working with SpeakUp, PCT, Mencap and many others

I'm A Person Too - Peer Support Project
The Valuing People Beacon authorities are embarking on a new project entitled “I’m A Person Too….” The project aims to improve the life chances of people with a learning disability, particularly those who are misunderstood and socially excluded because organisations often do not communicate well. The initiative will offer public sector agencies the opportunity to undertake training for more effective communication - and so help them meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is currently asking for expressions of interest for the regional contract for this project, the closing date is 9th November 2007. Please see the advert below for more information or contact Carole Bishop on 01709 302821 or email carole.bishop@rotherham.gov.uk
