Corporate Equality Strategy and Action Plan

The Council's commitment to equality and fairness for everyone is set out in our Corporate Equality Strategy and Action Plan. The strategy establishes clear aims and actions in relation to the Council's role as community leader, service provider and employer. It also includes practical information about issues relating to disabled people, lesbian, gay and bisexual people, people with family and caring responsibilities, race and the Race Equality Scheme, religious and other beliefs, trade union membership, transgender people, women and men and younger and older people.

Race Equality Scheme

We are currently working on our third Race Equality Scheme, which is the main document for our work on race equality.  This will be incorporated in a new single Equality Scheme covering different equality groups, but it will still retain its distinct character as our Race Equality Scheme.

Our current scheme and summary leaflets are on this page. The scheme sets out how we will meet the general duty to promote race equality and our arrangements to meet the other specific duties required by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act to bring about positive benefits for people in Rotherham.

Equality Standard for Local Government

The Equality Standard for Local Government provides Councils with a framework to help them improve fair treatment and equal access for everyone. It covers the Council’s role as a community leader, service provider and employer.

Standards are set at five levels, starting at Level 1 and moving up to Level 5. Rotherham Council began working towards Equality Standard Level 1 in 2004 and since then we made rapid progress to achieve Level 3. This means that we have shown commitment to equality, assessed our performance, carried out consultation and set improvement objectives. Our achievements were confirmed by the Improvement and Development Agency following an external audit in summer 2006. The auditors examined evidence from all Council services and interviewed councillors, representatives of community and partner organisations and Council employees.  Further progress has now been made to achieve Level 4.
