Important events and celebrations this month include:
1 Yorkshire Day
Yorkshire Day was formed to celebrate pride in Yorkshire and the traditional culture and heritage of our county. People wear a white rose, the emblem of Yorkshire, to support the day.
1 Lammas
A pagan festival of Celtic origin sometimes called Lughnasadh, marking the beginning of reaping and of harvest generally.
10 Tisha B’Av – Jewish
A solemn day that is the last day of a three week period of mourning beginning on Tammuz for a series of tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people over the years.
15 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Christian
A largely Roman Catholic festival, celebrating Mary, the mother of Jesus, being taken, body and soul, into heaven.
16 Raksha Bandhan - Hindu
Girls and women tie a ‘rakhi’ (a threaded band) on the right wrist of their brothers to wish them health, wealth, happiness and safety. In return they receive gifts, strengthening the bond of love between brothers and sisters- celebrated by Hindus.
24 Janamashtami
Hindu Commemoration of the birth of Krishna – the 8th incarnation of god Vishnu who took the form of Krishna to destroy the evil king Kansa.
