Rotherham Events and Celebrations - December 2008

Important events and celebrations this month include:

1 World Aids Day
A day for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Wearing a red ribbon is a sign of support for people living with HIV and AIDS.

3 International Day of Disabled People
The day aims to promote an understanding of disability and gather support for the dignity, rights, equality and well-being of disabled people.

5 Carers Rights Day
This year's theme is 'Making the most of your money' and the focus is on carers and their finances.

Rotherham Carers Forum are celebrating National Carers Rights Day on Friday 5th December in the RAIN Building. They are holding a road show from 9-30 am to 3-30 pm with providers from the voluntary, community and statutory sectors who support carers needs.

7 Hajj
Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca). The Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam, which every adult Muslim must undertake at least once if they can afford it and are physically able.

8 Eid ul Adha (probable date)
The festival remembers the prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael when Allah (God) ordered him to. Muslims who can afford to, share meat (usually a sheep) among family, friends and the poor, who each get a third share. There are prayers and also presents.

10 International Human Rights Day
Marked each year to ensure that every individual and institution promotes respect for human rights and secures their universal and effective recognition and implementation.

22 Hanukkah – Jewish Festival of Lights
Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days. A candle is lit on the Menorah (eight-branched candelabrum) each day, prayers are said and other rituals followed.

25 Christmas Day
A Christian holy day that marks the birth of Jesus, the son of God (the nativity). Celebrations include giving presents and cards; families share a special meal; singing Christmas carols and worshipping in church; nativity plays remember the story of Christmas, homes are decorated.

26 Boxing Day
The name goes back to medieval times, when alms boxes were placed at the back of every church to collect money for the poor.

29 Al Hijra - Islamic New Year
Marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers from Makkah (Mecca) to Medina.

31 New Years Eve / Hogmanay
It is the last day in the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated around the globe. Hogmanay is the name for the new year period in Scotland where celebrations traditionally last from new year’s eve until the morning of the 1 January.
