Rotherham Events and Celebrations - November 2008

Important events and celebrations this month include:

1 All Saints’ Day
A Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, where saints have special formal status.

11 Remembrance Sunday
Ceremonies at war memorials and cenotaphs are held to remember the men and women who died in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

11 Armistice Day
Marks the end of the First World War on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. At 11.00am
people pause for 2 minutes of silence to remember those who died in war.

13 Birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (Lunar calendar)
Celebration honouring the birthday of the founder of Sikhism. It is celebrated with a reading of the holy scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib, continuously from beginning to end by a team of Sikh men and women. They each read for 2-3 hours over a 48 hour period so that the reading ends early on the morning of the birthday.

13 Sangha Day – Buddhist
This is the second most important Buddhist festival. It is a celebration in honour of the Sangha, or Buddhist spiritual community. It is a chance for people to reaffirm their commitment to Buddhist practices and traditions.

25 International Day Against Violence Against Women
Also called White Ribbon Day – Violence against women is of such a worrying scale that the United Nations invited Governments and relevant agencies to organise activities to raise awareness of the problem. In England and Wales, two women a week are killed as a result of domestic violence. This day aims to work towards the elimination of violence against women. Wear a white ribbon to show your support.

30 Saint Andrew’s Day
St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. He was believed to have been crucified by a Roman governor on an X-shaped cross that was to become the inspiration for the cross that forms the Saltire, Scotland's national flag. St Andrew's Day is celebrated by Scots around the world.
