Rotherham Events and Celebrations - October 2008

Important events and celebrations this month include:

1-31 Black History Month
Black History Month happens every October in the UK and provides a wonderful occasion to celebrate the diversity of our society and the contributions Black and Asian men and women have made to the development of British society.

1 Eid ul Fitr – Islam (probable date)
Islamic event marking the close of Ramadan and is a festival of thanksgiving to Allah for enjoying the month of Ramadan.

6 Learn to Sign Week
From 6-12 October, Learn to Sign Week is an annual national campaign run by the British Deaf Association that aims to improve communications between the deaf and hearing worlds and celebrate deaf culture.

9 Dussera – Hindu
Hindu festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga and Lord Rama prevail over the demons. Prayers for blessings and favour are offered.

9 Yom Kippur - Jewish Day of Atonement
This holiest day of the Jewish year is observed with strict fasting and ceremonial repentance.

10 World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health day is held each year and aims to raise awareness of mental health and emotional well-being.

20 Birth of the Bab
Celebrated by Baha’i followers around the world.

28 Diwali
Hindu Festival of Lights symbolising the human journey towards the light, the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness. Celebrations involve gift exchanges, fireworks and festive meals. Celebrated also by Sikhs and Jains.

31 Hallowe’en / All Hallows’ Eve / Samhain
This tradition goes back to the Celtic people 2000 years ago, who celebrated their New Year in late autumn to honour Samhain or Lord of the dead. They put candles in windows and lit bonfires to scare away the spirits.
