More About Elections

How often are elections held?

Borough Council

The Borough Council is made up of 21 wards; each electing three councillors for a four year term of office. One seat in each ward is up for election every three years, leaving one year with no Borough Council election. Borough Council elections are held on the first Thursday in May.

Parish Councils

There are 26 Parish Councils in the Rotherham Borough area. Parish Councils are elected on a four yearly cycle, with every seat up for election at the same time. Parish Council elections are held on the first Thursday in May.

UK Parliament

Parliamentary elections are called by the Prime Minister of the day, but must be held within five years of the last general election. Rotherham Borough contains three constituencies, each returning an MP.

European Parliament

European Parliamentary elections are held every five years during the month of June. European elections are held on a regional basis, with Rotherham coming under the Yorkshire and the Humber Region, which returns six MEPs.
