Open art exhibition reveals Rotherham's talent

    15/07/2008

Artists from across the region will be flocking to Rotherham to display their mini-masterpieces in one of the largest artistic exhibits ever to be held in the borough.

Rotherham’s second annual Open Art Exhibition, which this year will be exhibiting over 140 works of art, opens on Saturday July 12 at the Rotherham Art Gallery, located in the Central Library and Arts Centre.

The exhibition, which was a smash-hit, last year, aims to showcase the work of artists both professional and amateur who are aged 17 or older and are living or working in South Yorkshire.

Included in the show are both traditional and contemporary approaches to fine art which have been produced in places as varied as their homes, schools, colleges, lofts and garden sheds!

Art lovers can have their say too. During the first two weeks of the show there will be a ballot box in the gallery so visitors can cast a vote for their favourite artwork on display.

At the end of the exhibition, the artists who participated will take part in an awards evening in which both “judges’ prizes” and “a people’s prize” will be handed out to the winning artists.

Director of Culture and Leisure, Phil Rogers, said: “The Open Art Exhibition has now become a bona-fide event in Rotherham’s cultural calendar. Although fine art is viewed as a minority activity in most towns and cities, when you see a show like this you begin to realise that so many people across the borough both appreciate art, and love to create it.

“There are many artists within the region pursuing their ideas and responses, often producing something extraordinary from familiar sources. This year, for the first time, we are featuring the work of ‘guest artists’ David Curtis and Richard Combes. Both have won numerous awards and are nationally and internationally renowned fine artists. Their work speaks for itself.

“Be a part of this event and come along to view the work and cast your vote, It will be interesting to see which painting, photograph, collage or sculpture is the chosen favourite of visitors to the show!”

The exhibition is free to view and runs until September 6.
