Rotherham pilots new way to help young children

    10/07/2008

Rotherham has become one of just ten areas around the country which will try out a new way of helping support children aged up to seven and their families/carers.

The Government today announced that Rotherham is one of the pilot areas for the '0-7 partnership programme' which will look at ways of developing links between the different Early Years and education experts who work with children and families.

The new approach aims to raise the standards of learning for children right through to age seven, provide an easier move for children from Early Years education to school and look at the best ways to share expertise and skills through joint training and development for staff.

Representatives from Rotherham will be meeting the Department for Children, Schools and Families later this month to go through detailed plans for how the pilot scheme will operate over the next three years.

Councillor Shaun Wright, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services, said: "The Council has invested significantly in Early Years provision over recent years and we have a good track record in Rotherham of using innovative new approaches to Early Years and school education so we are delighted to have the chance to take part in this trial.

"Ensuring that children get the best learning opportunities from a young age is the key building block to all the education and training that follows. We have a lot of expertise among different people working with young children and families and this new project will allow us to share that knowledge and use people's skills to ensure that children and their families are able to achieve more and improve their life chances."
