If you want to be part of these amazing adventures and haven’t yet discovered your local library, you’re missing out on a whole universe full of imagination, thrills and knowledge, and all for free!
Saturday April 26 is national “Join a Library Day” and in any of Rotherham’s 18 libraries you can discover books that cater for all tastes.
Supported by all libraries across England, the very special day is part of the National Year of Reading’s campaign to encourage everyone, including parents, grandparents, children and young people to join their local library.
The first children, young people and families who join any of Rotherham’s Libraries on Saturday will receive a free copy of the exclusive National Year of Reading’s "The Ultimate Book Guide" and a library welcome pack.
Librarians will also be on hand to advise on the range of reading opportunities available and on other events and reading projects taking place in the library.
Reader Development Officer Julie Hird said: “Joining your local library couldn’t be easier, all you need to do is take one piece of identification with you which has your current name and address on and within a few minutes you’re signed up. We really do have a host of material for everyone!”
“You can also join via the internet by visiting the
libraries section of the Council website Using this online page, you can check what items are currently in stock in each library, request items, download a free audiobook and renew any existing book loans without leaving the comfort of your home.”
Rotherham’s libraries have a range of free resources and a host of services, including reading challenges for adults and children, internet access, a library blog, rhyme times for the very young, story times, readers’ groups, author events and a reading festival.
The “Join a Library Day” launches a diverse on-going programme of activity in libraries across the country throughout the National Year of Reading including reading festivals and author visits. Full details of what's going on can be found on

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, Project Director of the National Year of Reading said: “We wanted to launch the Year of Reading with a reminder that we all have the right as citizens to read for free and that our libraries are brimming with ideas - dangerous, fun and diverting, as well as educational and practical, that can change our lives.
“We are delighted to have kicked off the year with a groundbreaking collaboration – and we will continue to promote libraries for the rest of the year.’’
Devised in partnership with The Reading Agency, The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and the Society of Chief Librarians, the library membership campaign aims to recruit 350,000 members throughout the course of the year.
