Pension Arrangements

The Council still operates a final salary pension scheme whilst many others in the private sector are closing, ours remains protected by statutory regulation of the Government.

Did you know?

  • The Council pays more than double the employee contribution towards pension benefits payable on retirement (N.B some changes are pending).
  • For those eligible employees with full service, the revised Local Government Pension Scheme is designed to pay an annual pension based on 1/60th of final salary per year of contributing service.
  • If pensionable employees retire early through ‘permanent’ ill health (i.e. medical condition deemed to last at least until age 65) enhanced retirement benefits are payable to those employees who qualify.
  • Widow’s / Widower’s / Children’s pensions are payable to employees who are eligible members of the Local Government Pension Scheme (subject to appropriate elections, nominations and rules of the scheme).
  • If they wish, employees may, (subject to agreement with the Council) continue working beyond the normal retirement age of 65.
  • Employees are able to opt for a more flexible retirement by requesting to reduce their hours or move to a lower graded post.
  • A long service award for employees with at least 20 years continuous service, is payable on retirement.
