Annette Swift, Law Clerk

History
When I left school my career ambitions were to work in an office doing admin/secretarial work. I’m now starting a course for Land Registration Law & Practice – thanks to the opportunities I have had with the Council.

I started with RMBC in January 2000 in a temporary Clerical Support Officer post covering maternity leave. Nine months later I secured a similar permanent role in the Business Support Unit in the Legal/ICT section. I then did a job swap with a colleague and moved into Legal Services where I later became a trainee Law Clerk working in support of the solicitors dealing with Council tenants who want to buy their Council house (Right to Buy).

What does your current job entail?
I deal with all the enquiries from both the public and internal departments regarding Right to Buy. I go through the completion of sales with the solicitors and deal with all the relevant paperwork. I also do the drafting of transfers and leases.

What do you most like about your job?
I enjoy my job because the work is so varied and interesting. I really enjoy dealing with people and get to talk to a wide variety. It is also satisfying when you have assisted someone to buy their property – recently I received a large bouquet of flowers from a satisfied customer which was really nice.

What are the benefits of working for the Council?
The Council’s flexi-time scheme is excellent. As I live quite a distance from work it enables me to book doctor’s and dentist appointments without having to use my annual leave. Also the training opportunities are great. I have been to loads of courses and seminars to keep me up to date on legislation relevant to my current job.
