Nicola Cheetham, Principal Enviro Crime Officer.

Employment History within the Council
I started at RMBC in Sept 2002 fresh from University. I was employed as an Enforcement Officer within the Enviro Crime Team within Environmental Health. I have progressed to Principal Enviro Crime Officer and stayed within this team throughout my time with the Council. Neighbourhood Enforcement is a fabulous team and I love where I work and those I work with.

What does your current job entail?
My duties and responsibilities cover Education and Enforcement of Environmental Crimes.

I manage a team of people who deal with offences such as Fly Tipping, Littering, Dog Fouling, Fly Posting, Business Waste, Graffiti, Waste Carriers offences, Dumped Rubbish, Householders waste and disposal. We also interview and prosecute those who commit these crimes.

The work I do is varied and I get involved in service delivery, organising education campaigns. I also attend all Comprehensive Schools in the borough to educate students about their actions, the consequences and how it affects them and other people.

What do you most like about your job?
My job is very satisfying as I am able to take peoples complaints and make a difference to their life, if they are being affected by some blight on their environment.

I work on each stage of the case from start to finish. This means I get to see the outcomes and it makes all the hard work worthwhile and rewarding.

What are the benefits of working for the Council?
Job satisfaction is high on my list, I can honestly say I love my job and have done since day one. It helps that it is interesting and so varied, I am pleased to have support from managers and also work with fantastic colleagues with a ‘can do’ attitude.

I have always been encouraged to develop my skills. For example, the council has a management development programme and I was supported through the Chartered Management Institute qualification.

There are also a lot of activities to get involved in. Our team have lots of fun out of work too. We have taken part in charity abseils, bowling competitions and social evenings; it really is a great place to work.

Not a day passes when I do not want to come to work.
