Employment History within the Council
I started working at the Council in January 2003 as an Assistant Planner. On the job learning gave me the skills to progress to a Planner and then into my current job as a Senior Planner.
What does your current job entail?
The team I work in deals with the statutory development plan. This plans sets out how Rotherham may change in the future and how land across the borough can be used. In the plan, land is allocated for specific use, e.g. business use, housing or for non-development. I’m currently working on the Rotherham Town Centre Masterplan. This includes how land can be used within the area. It is part of Rotherham Renaissance.

We also prepare ‘Planning’ policies which are used in deciding planning applications and therefore guide future development, ranging from the location of major new housing and employment development, through to the development of new shops, schools, and open spaces needed by local communities.
What do you most like about your job?
I enjoy my job because there is a great deal of variety in the work. I find offering advice and helping the local community with their planning queries both challenging and worthwhile. I get pleasure from helping the public. We get a lot of queries from people wondering what will, for example, be happening in the field behind their house in future years.
Also, the people I work with make Rotherham Council a great place to work.
What are the benefits of working for the Council?
I’m a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, the professional body for Planners. The Council has supported my continuing professional development in order to maintain my certified status.
I think the Council’s ‘flexi’ scheme is great. It means I am not tied to working set hours but can plan my working day around my needs and the needs of the service. The Council’s commitment to work-life balance means that the council works towards alleviating work pressures and stress.
