Council and Democracy

Rotherham is a Labour controlled authority. It has 63 elected members (councillors) including:

  • 55 Labour
  • 6 Conservative
  • 2 Independent

The Council’s Cabinet consists of ten councillors, including the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council. It has decision making powers delegated to it by the full Council.

The Cabinet makes key decisions on Council policy and budget. These are then agreed by the Full Council.

This is an internal link icon Scrutiny committees and panels are made up of councillors who are not Cabinet members. Their role includes holding the Cabinet to account for the decisions it takes and challenging the Council’s performance and making sure it meets people’s needs.

This is an internal link icon Area Assemblies are local partnerships made up of councillors, local residents and other organisations, such as Health, Police etc. There are seven Area Assemblies across the borough that deal with local issues at a local level.
