Concept of subjects with one being shown under a magnifying glass

Picking the subjects you want to study in Year 9 may seem scary or daunting at first, but don't worry! There is plenty of support and advice on hand to help you make the right decisions.

What Do I Have to Study?

There are certain subjects that you need to study and take exams in, they are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science

Also there are subjects you must do, but they might not have an exam at the end:

  • PE
  • Religious Studies
  • ICT
  • PHSE
  • Languages

What Can I Choose?

There are many different courses on offer for you to choose from such as:

  • Art, Drama & Music
  • Design & Technology
  • Geography & History
  • Health and Social Care
  • Catering
  • Salon Services
  • Construction & Engineering

These could be GCSES, BTECs, or NVQ's. They could also be assessed differently, you may have to do exams in some, coursework, or a mixture of both. Talk to your subject teachers to find out how you will be assessed.

When you are deciding what subjects to pick, there are different ways you can think about it:

  • What do you enjoy?
  • What are you good at?
  • Do you have any ideas what career you want and what qualifications you need?

Attending your school's options evenings or career days will give you an idea of what each course offers and what it leads to.
