Composting

Why should I compost?

A third of the average bin is taken up with waste that could be composted, or two thirds if you include paper and cardboard. Your dustbin could be much lighter and instead of filling up landfill sites you could be improving your garden soil. A compost heap is a recycling facility for kitchen and garden waste, producing a first-class, medium-fertility soil improver. No garden should be without a compost bin.

Autumn is an excellent time for composting as there is a great deal of nutrient-rich waste available.

Spent bedding plants, grass cuttings, autumn leaves and prunings can all be composted throughout the autumn and winter months, to produce a rich compost ideal for planting next spring.

And it saves you money on buying bags of compost!

How do I make compost?

Making compost is seen as a complex art, but in fact it is not that difficult: anyone can do it.

The process of converting waste to compost is carried out by naturally occurring creatures from worms to microbes that appear as if by magic.

All you have to do is to supply a suitable mixture of ingredients. Get the recipe
