Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are privately owned.
SSSIs are designated by English Nature, the government's advisor on nature conservation in England. SSSIs are given some protection against destruction. Activities which could be damaging are not allowed without permission.
The sites are managed by the owner in partnership with English Nature. There are 5 SSSIs in the borough. There is no right of public access to a SSSI, though public rights of way often pass through or near them.
