Roche Abbey Woodlands SSSI

The woodlands are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). King's Wood was notified by the Nature Conservancy Council (the forerunner of Natural England) in 1978 under Section 23 of the National Parks etc Act 1949 and the current boundaries of the site were renotified in 1984 under Section 28 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

Four woodlands are included in the SSSI - Nor Wood, Quarry Hills, Grange Wood and King's Wood - surrounding the ruins of the Cistercian Monastry. All are owned by the Sandbeck Estate.

They are crossed by public footpaths.

Footpath 10 (Maltby) runs south through Nor Wood, along Quarry Hills and by the Abbey while footpath 22 (Thurcroft) runs through King's Wood to Laughton-en-le-Morthen with footpath 24 (Thurcroft) diverging off to Slade Hooton.

There is a also a concessionary footpath running through Lady's Well Meadow on the opposite bank of the Maltby Dike from the Abbey and linking footpaths 10 and 22.

Please keep to the footpaths and note that rock climbing is not allowed anywhere in the woods.
