Countryside and Wildlife Organisations

There are local societies which can cater for your interest in local wildlife.

Rotherham Naturalists' Society

The society covers all of Rotherham and provides visits organised by responsible leaders in and around Rotherham town, canal, ponds and countryside. Organised visits are arranged out of Rotherham to places of natural history interest.

The society supports your interest in birds, flowers, insects, butterflies, fungi, mammals, grasses, trees.

Formed in 1880 to enjoy, protect and preserve the wildlife and amenities of the countryside particularly within the Rotherham district.

Rotherham Naturalists' Society has a special appeal to those who are interested in the countryside and in the preservation of wildlife and local amenities.

Field meetings are held throughout the year in Rotherham and surrounding areas. Meetings are also arranged to special interest places for birds and scenic beauty. Indoor meetings are held occasionally.

Sorby Natural History Society

The society covers the Sheffield area, including all of Rotherham. It has sections catering for those with a particular interest in Birds, Mammals, Invertebrates, Fungi, Flowering Plants, Geology, Microscopy and Photography.

Barnsley Naturalists' Society

The society covers the Barnsley area and includes the northwestern part of Rotherham.

Doncaster Naturalists' Society

The society covers the Doncaster area and includes the northeastern part of Rotherham and has been recording Doncaster's wildlife since 1880. They meet twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings between October and April at St Mary's Church Hall, Beckett Road, Doncaster (access from St Mary's Road) at 7.15pm.

They have a full programme of summer field trips between April and September, normally within the borough of Doncaster, and they also organise occasional workshops.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust

The Wildlife Trust is the largest environmental charity in Sheffield and Rotherham, and works to promote the conservation, protection, and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the local area.

The Trust manages ten nature reserves, including the newest which is being developed at Centenary Riverside, Rotherham; it works on special projects to protect vulnerable habitats and species; and it is involved in initiatives to make parks and green spaces more welcoming to wildlife. The Trust also works with local communities, young people and schools, and has a diverse training programme - all aimed at increasing local wildlife knowledge, and enthusing people about their local green spaces.

Yorkshire Naturalists' Union

The union covers all of Yorkshire, including all of Rotherham. It has sections catering for those with a particular interest in birds, mammals, invertebrates, fungi, flowering plants, bryophytes and freshwater biology.
