The 2011 Council Tenants and Leaseholders Garden Competition

Green-fingered Rotherham residents are being invited to show off their 'blooming marvellous' gardening skills by entering our annual Garden Competition. The competition, which is open to all Council tenants and leaseholders, aims to reward those tenants and leaseholders who make a real difference to their areas by taking pride in their gardens.

You don't have to be an expert gardener - just entering the competition means you are joining in the spirit, with a chance to share your successes, failures, and tips with neighbours and friends.

Following our success last year to find the tallest sunflower in Rotherham we will be running this competition again this year (last year's winner was an impressive three metres high!)

We have also introduced two new categories - the best vegetable patch and the best hanging basket.

The hanging basket category means that, even if you have the smallest garden, you can enter the competition. And you don't have to go for the traditional flower basket. In recent years, baskets have been giving a whole new twist, capable of displaying a wide variety of plants from succulents to fruit and vegetables to herbs.

Alternatively, why not enter the new Best Vegetable Patch category. As well as contributing to a more sustainable way of living, you could save money on your food bills and also have a chance to win £25.

To judge the competition, Rotherham will be split into seven area categories with two winners chosen from each area (this includes best garden entrants under 60 and best entrant aged 60 and over).

The two winners from each area will receive a prize of £50 and will be entered into a borough wide Best in Show category, with the overall winner receiving an additional prize of £100.

There will also be one winner from across Rotherham for each Tallest Sunflower, Best Vegetable Patch and Best Hanging Basket. Each winner will receive a prize of £25.

Please enter the competition using an entry form from one of our neighbourhood offices or from your local library. Check the rules first.

The closing date for entries is Thursday, 7th July, 2011. Judging will be carried out from this day onwards. All Tallest Sunflowers will be judged from Tuesday, 6th September, 2011.

Happy gardening!
