Home Contents Insurance

Apply for contents insurance

It is important to take out insurance to protect the cost of replacing your belongings.

The Council does not insure your furniture, belongings or decorations against theft, fire, vandalism and burst pipes.

A special scheme, arranged by Aon through Aviva (used to be known as Norwich Union), allows Rotherham Council tenants and leaseholders to easily and cheaply protect their belongings. You need to have a clear rent account to be accepted on the scheme.

When you take out this insurance most of your household goods and contents will be insured. The insurance also covers theft of your keys and the contents of your freezer. There is also cover for personal liability.

Accidental Damage is not covered as standard by this insurance other than as detailed in the policy summary. However, a full accidental damage option is available at an additional cost (see cost of insurance table and policy summary).

The lowest amount that can be insured is £9000 or £6000 if you are over the age of 60.

All your home contents are covered on a 'new for old' basis, with the exception of linen and clothing which will be replaced at their current cost, less an amount for wear and tear.

How much does it cost?

How much you pay for your insurance depends on the value of your belongings. You will need to work out how much it will cost to replace the full contents.

If you under value your contents this will mean that if you claim, you will not get the full value of your claim. You can use the do-it-yourself valuation page within the insurance pack to help work out how much cover you need and how much this will cost. The costs include Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate.

How do I apply?

To apply complete the insurance pack. Information of where to send the completed form is included in the pack.

When does my cover start?

Your cover starts when the Council informs you that you have been accepted onto the scheme. The start date will always be a Monday. We will write to you with details of your insurance payments and the date when you should start paying. You will be notified in writing if for any reason, you have not been accepted into the scheme.

To make sure that you are always covered you must keep up to date with your payments. You will not be allowed to make a claim unless your payments are up to date.
