Tax credit and pension credits

Tax Credits

  • Working tax credit and child tax credit are administered by Her Majesties Revenues and Customs (HMRC)
  • It is financial support for families and for people in work
  • It replaces existing working families tax credits, disabled persons tax credit and the children's tax credit
  • You can request a form from the Inland Revenue or visit their web site
  • If you are receiving housing benefit or council tax benefit you will need to inform the benefits office if you receive one of the tax credits, because this may effect your benefit claim


Pension credits

  • The department for work and pensions introduced pension credits in October 2003
  • They replaced the minimum income guarantee (MIG)
  • They have continued to provide at least the same minimum income for people aged 60 and over
  • They have also provided a reward to those over 65 who have modest savings
  • Pension credit has also provided extra help for nearly half of all people aged 60 and over
  • This scheme affects people over 60 who receive housing benefit or council tax benefit
