Register a birth

  1. Register a birth (You are here)
  2. Information for the register
  3. Documents to bring to the appointment
  4. Cost

The birth of a baby must be registered within 42 days of the date of birth. You need to make an appointment to do this.

The birth must be registered in the area where the baby was born, even if you live in a different area. If you choose to go to another Registrars office in England or Wales, they will forward the details to the office which is in the district where the birth took place.

If the parents were married to each other when the baby was born, either parent can register the birth.

If the parents were not married to each other when the baby was born, both parents should attend the Register Office together if the father's details are to be included in the register.

The Register Office is in Riverside House, open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
