Conservation Areas in Rotherham

What are Conservation Areas?

Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, every Local Planning Authority has a duty to consider designating Conservation Areas. A Conservation Area is an area of special architectural interest, the character of which is desirable to preserve or enhance.  They are often, but not exclusively centred on listed buildings. However, it is the character of the area, including its landscape qualities, rather than the presence of individual buildings which justifies designation as a Conservation Area.

Conservation Areas in Rotherham

There are currently 26 Conservation Areas in Rotherham.  25 of these are shown on the Proposals Map of the existing Unitary Development Plan. Doncaster Road, Rotherham was designated following adoption of the UDP and became Rotherham's 26th conservation area.

The UDP (Policy ENV2.10) also lists 12 possible new conservation areas. 11 of these are now being proposed for designation. [Two sites, at Turnerwood and Norwood along the Chesterfield Canal, were also suggested for investigation.  These, however, have now been discounted as the vast majority of the lock structures and bridges are adequately protected as listed buildings.]

Proposed New Conservation Areas : Your Views Wanted.

The following 11 areas are being suggested as possible new conservation areas in the Local Development Framework's Sites and Policies Document.  For each a map is provided giving the proposed conservation area boundary together with a character appraisal.  Character Appraisals are intended to recognise the conservation area's special historic, archaeological and architectural interest through maps, photographs and analysis of the area's development.
