You will usually still have have to pay Council Tax on an empty and unfurnished home, but you may get a discount.

A discount of 25 percent may be available for up to 6 months from the date a property becomes empty and unfurnished. We do not give a discount on properties that remain furnished.

If the owner of a house has died, Council Tax isn't charged for up to six months after you get probate (your legal right to sell the home).

You may get a discount if your home is undergoing major repair work or structural changes. For example, your walls are being rebuilt.
