Excellent Level of the Equality Framework for Local Government

The Equality Standard for Local Government provided councils with a framework to help them improve fair treatment and equal access for everyone. It covered the Council's role as a community leader, service provider and employer.

Standards were set at five levels, starting at Level 1 and moving up to Level 5.

The Council began working towards Equality Standard Level 1 in 2004 and made rapid progress to achieve Level 3 following an external audit in summer 2006.

This means that we showed our commitment to equality, assessed our performance, carried out consultation and set improvement objectives.

The Equality Mark certificate in recognition of this achievement was presented to representatives of the Council by Lord Herman Ouseley in February 2007.  Further progress was then made to achieve Level 5.

The new Equality Framework for Local Government replaced the Equality Standard in April 2009 to help councils make further progress on equality.

Rotherham was the first council in the country to achieve Excellent level under this new framework, following a successful Diversity Peer Challenge in November 2009.
