Rotherham's Imagination Library

imagination library

The Imagination Library is a book-gifting scheme, created by Dolly Parton, for under-fives living in Rotherham.  Children receive age-appropriate books once a month until they reach their 5th birthday.  The books are personally addressed to the child at their home address.

How do I register my child?

Registration is free, if your child is aged between 0 to 5 years old and lives in Rotherham.

Or, you can download, print and complete the registration form and return to us or hand it in at your local children's centre, library or school. You can also download a version of the form in Arabic.

To check if your address is eligible please visit the Rotherham Postcode Search page.  If your address appears in the search results you should be eligible.

When will my child receive the books?

Your child's Imagination Library books will begin arriving in your home six to eight weeks after your registration has been activated, and will continue every month until your child reaches the age of five. With the arrival of the first book, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', your child will experience the excitement of receiving their very own book through the letterbox - and spending quality time reading with you and other family members.

The Imagination Library book is a free gift to your child and you will not receive a bill for the books. All that's expected is that you will read to your child every day to support your child's early literacy and language development and readiness for school.

What happens if I change my address?

Just complete online Change of Address form or telephone the Imagination Library  and provide details of your new address.

Please note the information on the Imagination Library database is forwarded to the USA at least one month in advance of the book deliveries. Therefore it is likely that your change of address details will take up to 8 weeks to come into effect. For more information please read the detailed schedule of change of address and expected delivery date.

Hopefully you will have arrangements in place with Royal Mail to have your mail re-directed to your new property.

However should the next Imagination Library book be returned to us we will contact you to make arrangements to collect the book from the reception of Riverside House.

Are there any other activities that can help me to read with my child?

Your local library, Children's Centre, school, playgroup and other organisations will have information and advice on how to read with your child and may offer other family learning activities that you can go to.

Making a donation

The Imagination Library is funded by organisations, charities and individuals who sponsor the cost of the books and postage. This costs just over £2.00 per child per month making an approximate total of £125 for the full 5 years if a child registers at birth. If you know of a business, organisation, or individual who would like to donate funds to support this gift to Rotherham children, please let them know that they may do so by contacting the Imagination Library.

For those wishing to make a donation by post, cheques should be made payable to RMBC with the following details on the back of the cheque: Imagination Library Account Number EL0126
