The Council's Biological Records Centre collects and manages information on wildlife, sites and habitats in the Rotherham area.

Since our database was launched in 1988, we have collected over 1.6 million records, contributed largely by local amateur naturalists and specialist recording groups. A small, dedicated team of volunteers also provide valuable support by helping to input the large backlog of historical, paper-based records.

In total, well over 10,000 species, subspecies and hybrid plants and animals have been recorded in Rotherham. This represents around 25 percent of the UK total in just 0.01 percent of the UK land area. The information held in our database also provided the basis for assessment leading to the designation of Rotherham’s extensive network of Local Wildlife Sites.
