Family and Disabled Walks

A guide for disabled, less mobile, visually impaired and families with push chairs

Rotherham has nearly 400 km of footpaths and bridleways. These go through rolling landscapes and stunning parkland. The nature of the working countryside, the characteristics of the rights of way network and the undulating landscape make it difficult for many less able users to find suitable routes to use.

This section has been designed to give information to those who are disabled, blind or partially sighted, less mobile or have young children in push chairs to enjoy more of the local countryside.

The routes have been divided into two categories. Access for All describes fully accessible routes which are available to wheel chair users based upon national best practice. Easy Going Walks is designed for users with limited mobility and some are available to families with push chairs.

The public rights of way network is continually being reviewed to find ways of improving accessibility. Access to the elderly and users with limited mobility can be greatly improved by removing stiles and replacing them with gaps or gates. We are currently working towards removing as many stiles as possible to allow greater use of the network.

As with all countryside activities, you are responsible for your own safety. You should ensure that you are adequately clothed and equipped for your journey. Remember the weather can change at any time. Above all, do not proceed on any route you are not comfortable with using.
