Walking for Leisure
The Visitor Centre stocks a range of leaflets on self-guided walks, cycle and horse riding routes to assist you in uncovering the delights of this area. Why not amble along the Cuckoo Way (Chesterfield Canal) said to be the prettiest towpath in England or enjoy the serene atmosphere at Firsby Nature Reserve.
If challenge walks are more appealing, then why not try the Rotherham Ring Route, a 50 mile circular walk around the boundary of Rotherham. The route information is supplied in a leaflet, available from the Visitor Centre, priced at £2.00. For those completing the walk there are badges and completion certificates available.
Rotherham is linked to the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network, which can easily be divided into three sections:
- Rother Valley Country Park to Rotherham (9 miles)
- Rotherham to the picturesque estate village of Wentworth (11 miles)
- Wentworth to Wath via Elsecar, Dove Canal and Wath Wetlands (6 miles)
Rotherham offers a wealth of countryside activities for all year round enjoyment. Whether you're a walker, cyclist, watersports enthusiast or just enjoy the outdoors, a visit to this area is an excellent way of exploring this beautiful and golden part of Yorkshire.
Rotherham has some lovely countryside that can be explored either on foot. A special pack of suitable routes is available free of charge from the Visitor Centre.
For walkers, the Public Rights of Way team publishes Trail Leaflets, and the more ambitious can try the Trans Pennine Trail
Remember ...
You should always observe the off road code:
- Keep to rights of way - find them on a map
- Treat plants and animals with respect
- Stick to the well used track - don't cause erosion
- Close gates behind you
- Don't leave litter and keep the countryside tidy, reduce the risk of fire and the attraction of rodents.
- Always wear a cycle helmet.
- Be seen - it's fluorescent by day, reflective by night.
- Give way to horses and walkers when you are on shared paths and bridleways.
- Most accidents happen downhill - take care!
- Follow the Country Code
Be Prepared ...
Always carry with you:
- a rainproof jacket
- a map of the area (choose Pathfinders)
- a first aid kit
- a mobile phone or change for the telephone
- and don't forget food and drink in case the walk takes you longer than you thought
