Trans Pennine Trail

The Trans Pennine Trail is the country's first purpose built multi-user network. It runs coast to coast between the ports of Liverpool and Hull, linking with the seaside resorts of Hornsea and Southport. Towns and cities across the north of England are connected including Manchester, Leeds, Chesterfield and York.

Walkers and Cyclists can use the whole 350 miles with horseriders too on many sections. Easy gradients and surfaced paths make much of the Trail suitable for some people using wheelchairs or pushchairs. Lots of the TPT is traffic free providing a great facility for families.

The Trail forms the English Section of European Long Distance Footpath Number 8 (E8), a walking route from the west of Ireland right across Europe to Istanbul in Turkey.

The TPT also ties in with the National Cycle Network and is numbered accordingly.

Two sections of the Trans Pennine Trail also pass through Rotherham

The Trans Pennine Trail in Rotherham

Rotherham lies on the north south link of the TPT, which runs from the Dearne to Chesterfield. The routes in Rotherham offer pleasant ways for walkers, cyclists and horseriders between the Elsecar Heritage Centre, Meadowhall, Rotherham Town Centre and Rother Valley Country Park.

The Trans Pennine Trail Rotherham Area leaflet and further information on the TPT in Rotherham can be obtained from the  Rights of Way Team.

Friends of TPT - Why not get involved?

The Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail is a voluntary body of people who want to get the most out of the TPT and see it succeed. They help by lobbying, campaigning, providing practical assistance, supporting the Trail project team and promoting the TPT.

The friends and the TPT operate a TPT Steward Scheme with volunteers across the country acting as the 'eyes and ears' when they are out and about on the TPT.

If you want to know more about joining the Friends of the TPT Stewards scheme see the TPT web site, contact the TPT office in Barnsley or the Friends Secretary:-
