PE and School Sports in Rotherham

PE and School Sport in Rotherham

Never before has there been such an exciting time for PE and School Sport in Rotherham. Great strides have been taken over the last few years to improve and increase PE and Sport opportunities for all young people, and 2010-2012 will see further expansion of existing and new initiatives.

Building on the success of the 2005 to 2008 PESSCL strategy. PE and School Sport will be fully integrated into Active Rotherham - A Strategy for Sport & Physicial Activity 2010-2020 due to be launched later this year. An action plan in line with this strategy will set out the vision for developing PE and School Sport provision across the borough.

Specialist Sports Colleges

Specialist Sports Colleges are at the hub of the Government's strategy to enhance young people's opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports as well as raising the standards of teaching and learning of PE and school sport.

The Youth Sport Trust continues to play a central role in the development and support of sports colleges. We assist schools in every aspect of the application process and work with them to realise their potential once they have successfully achieved Specialist Sports College status.

Specialist Sports Colleges position PE and sport at the centre of the curriculum, using it as a vehicle to develop and improve learning opportunities for all.

Rotherham now has four Sports Colleges, Wickersley School & Sports College, Rawmarsh School: A Sports College, Thrybergh School & Sports College & Abbey: A Sports College.

School Sport Partnerships (SSPs)

School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) are groups of schools working together to develop PE and sport opportunities for all young people.

A typical partnership consists of:

  • A partnership development manager (PDM);
  • up to eight school sport co-coordinators (SSCos);
  • 45 primary and special school link teachers (PLTs).

A PDM is a full-time role usually based within a Sports College. They manage the SSP and develop strategic links with key partners in sport and the wider community.

An SSCo is based in a secondary school and concentrates on improving school sport opportunities, including out of hours school learning, intra and inter-school competition and club links, across a family of schools.

PLTs are based in primary and special schools and aim to improve the quantity and quality of PE and sport in their own schools.

Rotherham has two School Sports Partnership, Rawmarsh School Sport Partnership & Wickerlsey School Sport Partnership. Together they cover 16 Secondary schools, 103 Primaries and 6 Special schools. Although each SSP has a different focus, both have the same ultimate goal: - to improve the opportunities in sport and physical education for all young people at all levels

Each year both School Sports Partnerships complete a national survey for each of its schools, to find out this years latest results click on the following links.

Competition Managers

The Competition Manager infrastructure is implemented, within School Sport Partnerships, across the 49 county areas in England. Every school in the country belongs to a School Sports Partnership, of which there are 10 in South Yorkshire. Competition Managers are a new part of the School Sports Partnerships Infrastructure and will closely work with National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sports Clubs and Competition deliverers to establish our vision

Since the appointment of the Competition Manager within Rotherham, the two partnerships have been working to assess and evaluate the effectiveness behind the inter-school competition structure currently being followed. Adaptations have already been made in the last 18 months and further will be throughout this academic year to ensure the most effective and nationally-driven competition structure as possible.
