These documents are from the archive collection of Parker Rhodes, Solicitors (ref no. 63-B). The documents relate to a brick works at Parkgate owned by small-time industrialist Henry Moss.
The 1871 census shows Henry working as a brick manufacturer in Parkgate employing four men. In 1874 he went into partnership with a man named Alfred Morgan to form a brick making company.
But, by 1879, Henry had got into financial trouble and the Sheffield Union Banking Company issued a "bill of sale" to both Henry and William, his son, at 13 and 15 Rotherham Road, Parkgate. It lists items of furniture, including a maiden pot and cheffioneer, which were to be repossessed to pay debts.
The document also shows that 13 Rotherham Road had a grocer's shop attached to it. By 1881 Henry had given up the brick-making business and started selling fruit and vegetables.
