Dealing with Bereavement

Registering a death

Deaths can be registered at Rotherham's Register Office. The death must normally be registered within 5 days. There is no charge for registering a death.

Funeral arrangements

The Council administers nine borough cemeteries and the Crematorium at Ridgeway. Staff can offer sympathetic advice and help.

Funeral Directors will provide you with assistance in making the funeral arrangements.

Dignity Caring Funeral Services can help with details of funeral directors located within the borough.

Bereavement support

Cruse Bereavement Care offers free information and advice to anyone who has been affected by a death.

The coroner

A coroner is responsible for enquiring into those deaths reported to him or her. It is the coroner's duty to find out the medical cause of the death.  If the death is not due to natural causes, the coroner will hold an inquest.  The telephone number for the Coroner's office is 01709 832031.

The Registrar is unable to register a death until the coroner has completed his or her enquiries.
