Information for people selling fireworks

The Law

Fireworks (Safety) Regulations 1997

  • It is an offence to sell any fireworks (including sparklers) to anyone who is apparently under the age of 18
  • Fireworks that are to be sold to the general public must meet British Standard 7114, and have a label on them stating this
  • Sparklers must be labelled "Warning - not to be given to children under five years of age"
  • Fireworks must not be sold separately if they are originally intended to be sold together as a pack

The following fireworks must not be sold to members of the general public, no matter how old the person is who wants to buy them:

  • Fireworks intended for professional use
  • Bangers (including batteries containing bangers, for example, Chinese crackers)
  • Aerial shells and maroons, shells in mortar and maroons in mortar
  • Mini rockets
  • Fireworks with unpredictable flight (for example, jumping jacks and ground spinners)

Premises storing fireworks ready for sale must be registered to do so.  There are strict rules on how fireworks should be stored, and you should get advice from the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service on how to do this safely.
