Summer Wasps and Ants
Last year Rotherham 's Pest Control Service carried out almost 4000 pest treatments, with around 10,000 visits to people's homes over the course of the year. Whilst most of these visits were in relation to public health pests such as Rats, Mice and Cockroaches which present a risk of disease to humans, there were significant numbers of visits made in relation to nuisance pests, particularly during the summer months, such as Wasps and Ants.
The summer always sees an explosion of complaints about Wasp nests. The overwhelming majority of these occur towards the end of the summer when the Wasps are gorging themselves on fermenting fruit and becoming a nuisance. The Wasps will be making their nests now and at present are unlikely to be a major concern. However if you ignore them now they will cause you serious problems later in the summer when the Wasps are drunk on the alcohol from the fermenting fruit. It is at this point that the Wasps begin to sting people in earnest, so report them now so that we can eradicate the nests before they become a drunken swarm of stingers.
Finally Black Ants inevitably get into peoples homes during the summer. Ants are not a public health concern and are unlikely to cause any harm. They are certainly unsightly and unwelcome in many cases. Where the Ants are in the garden then it would be unwise to contact any Pest Control Service as there is little sustainable treatment that can be undertaken and the costs would be high. For Ants in your garden it is cheaper to purchase good proprietary Ant poisons and treat them yourself.
If you have Ants in your house then it is essential that you seek professional advice, in that although the Ants themselves do not present public health concerns, there habit of walking across food preparation surfaces can increase the risk of contamination of foods and food surfaces which can lead to illness.
