Libraries - computers and the internet

What's on offer

All our library sites have computers which are available for anyone to use for free. We provide access to the internet, office software, photo editing software, scanning and printing facilities (charges apply).

Under 16's need a parent or guardian's permission to use the internet and under 8's do need a parent or guardian to sit with them while they use the internet.

All customers have to agree to abide by the terms and conditions set out in the Library's acceptable use policy before being allowed to use the computers.

Courses

Your local library is the ideal place to learn new computer skills, we have courses for everyone whether you're an absolute beginner or just want to find out more about what the internet has to offer. For our courses we use the BBC Absolute Beginners and Webwise. See your local library's webpage for details when sessions are run.

Hire of centres

The library IT facilities are available to hire to organisations wishing to offer accredited training to the public. Interactive whiteboards are available to use at some libraries. Contact us to find out more, including hire charges and availability.

Rotherham Library Service has become partners in Race Online 2012 which aims to get over 1 million people online by the start of the London Olympics. For more details see the Race Online website.

Book a PC

Online: If you are a member of the library and know your library card number and PIN you can book a computer online.

Telephone: Library staff will be happy to book a computer for you. Just give your preferred library a call.

Visit: You can call in and log onto any available computer. If you are just visiting Rotherham you can still use a computer - just ask to be logged on as a guest.

Online safety

The library service uses filtering software to help reduce the risk of your child accessing inappropriate content, but please be aware that this is not 100% effective. It remains your responsibility to talk to your child about the internet, although we do have advice here to help you.

If you do not want your child to have internet access please speak to a member of staff so that we can change their membership to reflect this.

CyberSafe Guide

Our younger users will have to work through the library's online CyberSafe Guide before being allowed to use the internet in the library.

Let our SMART Superheroes show you how to avoid the perils and pitfalls of the internet and help build a safer digital world for you.

Online learning

If you can not attend a library session you may want to look at one of our online learning sites.

These cover a range of skills, from beginners to more advanced and courses just to give you more knowledge about your favourite hobbies and interests.
