Research Services
The archives and local studies service offers a research service for family history and local history enquiries from people who are unable to visit in person.
There are three levels of service:
- Routine enquiries about archives and local studies services. This includes opening hours, making bookings, availability of particular sources etc, there is no charge for this service.
- Requests for photocopies or transcripts
For example, extracts from books, pamphlets, newspapers & journals, The charge for this will include the cost of the copies, a handling charge and postage.
- Requests for research into original documents
This might include archival documents, books, pamphlets, newspapers and journals, site histories, parish registers, census microfilm etc.
A research charge will be offered to all enquiries where exact references cannot be supplied.
We offer 3 levels of service:
1. Basic Research up to 15 minutes - the research will use no more than two sources, and will need an accurate date or reasonable time span. One free photocopy is supplied.
2. Research up to 30 minutes - Research and up to two free photocopies are provided.
3. Research per hour or thereafter - Research and up to four free photocopies are provided.

Ordering
If you would like the archives and local studies service to provide research for you, please contact us with as much information as possible with your payment.
Payment for research should be made by £ sterling cheque, postal order or money order, payable to "Rotherham MBC".
For overseas enquiries payments can be accepted in foreign currencies but should include the equivalent of an extra £10.00 to cover exchange costs.
What the service covers
In return you will receive a detailed research report with the sources that have been checked and the information that has been found. We may also provide you with recommendations for further research.
If we are unable to complete the research within the time that has been paid for, we will send you the information found with an estimate of the time necessary to complete the enquiry.
