History
Greenlands Park is a hidden gem in the heart of North Anston. Covering almost 7 hectares in size it is very popular with its local community and provides a relaxing atmosphere away from the busy A57.
The park is ideally situated for inclusion in scenic walks around the Anston and Dinnington area.
The site opened as a public park in 1974 and before this formed part of the large Anston Quarry. The stone quarried from the park was used to rebuild the Houses of Parliament following a devastating fire in 1834. This stone was chosen for its durability to survive London's polluted air, its availability in large quantities and also for the transport links to London.
Between 1840 and 1844 half a million cubic feet of stone was quarried and transported to London via the Chesterfield Canal, River Trent, Humber Estuary and the North Sea. Unfortunately some of the stone began to wear and so was replaced however a substantial amount of Greenlands stone still remains in the Houses of Parliament. A pinnacle from Westminster now resides in the memorial gardens in South Anston.
The park today has seen much improvement. The addition of the new surgery has added a welcoming entrance to the park with new landscaping and parking facilities. There has also been a new attractive pavilion built which is available for hire and also a new play facility very popular with younger children. Greenlands TARA is working hard with the Council to continue this development.
