Street Naming and Property Numbering
The naming and numbering of streets and buildings is controlled by the Council under the Public Health Act 1925 and the South Yorkshire Act 1980. The Council notifies statutory bodies, emergency services, the Royal Mail and interested parties within the Council of all new addresses issued.
NB: The Council does not allocate POSTCODES or POSTAL DISTRICTS. These matters are controlled by Royal Mail. (Phone 0846 011110 and choose option 3 and then option 1)
Naming of new roads
The Council will consult with various bodies including Parish Councils, Royal Mail and developers to choose suitable new road names. Names that are already in existence in the local area will not be repeated in new roads or buildings.
Once building work has commenced on a site, developers contact the authority to request postal addresses. A process of consultation is undertaken, including obtaining suggestions from the Ward and Parish Councillors for the area. Developers may use the suggested name(s), or propose their own. This process usually takes about 2 months to complete.

Numbering
All new developments must be numbered. The house numbers are allocated once the road name is agreed. By allocating postal numbers the Council is trying to ensure that the property can be easily and quickly located, especially by the emergency services.
All numbers, apart from 13, are used in the proper sequence. If new homes are erected between existing houses where no gaps in the numbering exist, a suffix to the numbers may need to be used e.g., 1a, 1b,1c.
Confirmations of the correct postal addresses, together with layout plans, are sent to the developers, Royal Mail, Ordnance Survey, emergency services and utility companies. Following receipt of this notification, the Royal Mail assigns the Postal Districts and postcodes.
Adding a house or building name
You can apply to add a name to your house but this must be used in addition to the number, not as an alternative. The number cannot be dropped.
Please see the other pages in this section for more details about our processes for address management.
