Key Stages in Street Naming

nameplate2

Parish and ward councillors are told that a development has started and that it will need new street names. Councillors and are asked for  suggestions which reflect local history and heritage. However, the Council will only exceptionally name streets after a living individual.

These suggestions, together with others occasionally put forward by the Archives and Local Studies Service in the library, are sent to the developer for consideration.

The developer may choose to use these suggestions, or propose some of their own.

As long as the suggested names are not duplicated in the locality, or could be confused with an existing name, or are frivolous or obscene, we will normally proceed with the street naming under Section 17 of the Public Health Act.

If objections are raised or alternative names put forward during the process, the consultation exercise will be repeated. Councillors will be asked to choose a name to be advertised on site for public consultation. This follows the procedures outlined in Section 18 of the Public Health Act.

After 28 days, the notice will be removed from site. Any objections will be dealt with through the magistrates court. In such circumstances there would be some delay to the formal adoption of the name. If the magistrates uphold any objection, then the consultation process would be repeated.
