Light Pollution and Nuisance

To make a report, please contact us

Light pollution and nuisance is a growing problem to many residents due to the large numbers of security lighting around domestic properties.

Recent legislation has recognised light pollution as a Statutory Nuisance. This means that the Council can take action in extreme cases, but, a friendly chat with your neighbour will often resolve the problem.

Residents are asked to make sure that exterior light fittings are chosen and positioned carefully to avoid affecting their neighbours. Where problems do occur, a tactful approach to those responsible will often have the desired effect.

Many security lights are too bright and badly aimed. 300W and even 500W fittings are often used for domestic security lighting when 150W lamps are more than adequate. Units with infra red detectors should be positioned carefully to avoid unwanted switching of the units.

Taken together these actions will help to minimise nuisance and at the same time reduce energy consumption for the owner.
