Lost or Stray Dogs
Dogs which are not in the control of their owners can cause a range of problems. For example, car accidents, dog fights and attacks on people. Stray dogs can not only cause a nuisance but lead to unwanted litters of puppies. Stray dogs are no longer the responsiblity of South Yorkshire Police.
To help keep stray dog numbers down, the Council has a duty to seize stray dogs. To carry out this activity we have a Dog Warden Service which also carries out an enforcement and educational role.
If the Council seizes a dog the owner will have to pay to recover the dog. The current fees are:
- £25 statutory fee
- £21.50 handling and boarding fee
- £8.50 per night kenneling fee
Any finder who wishes to keep a stray dog must do so for not less than 31 days according to law.
If you have found a stray dog, please contact us.
