Dog fouling in domestic gardens

Dog faeces in domestic gardens should be cleared away daily by placing it inside plastic bags, tied and put in a wheelie bin, or flushed down a foul sewer with plenty of water (not a surface water sewer or soak-away).

An accumulation of dog faeces, allowed to increase over time, can cause problems to the neighbouring properties in terms of offensive odours and attracting flies to the area.

The Council has powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to deal with an accumulation of dog faeces if it is felt to be a health risk or a nuisance. The Council would normally contact the occupant of the premises and request that the garden be cleared of all dog faeces and that it remain clean. If this is not carried out, the Council can then take formal action in the form of an abatement notice to request the works.

If the abatement notice is not complied with the Council can then arrange for the work to be carried out and any costs involved are charged to the occupier of the property. Failure to comply with the notice may also result in prosecution.
