Definitive Map and Statement
The Definitive Map is the legal record of public rights of way within the borough. If a route is shown on the map, that is conclusive evidence that public rights run along it.
The Definitive Map is accompanied by a Statement. This describes the routes featured on the map. The Statement may contain a description of the route, details of the path width and any restrictions.

The Definitive Map review
The Council is legally required to keep the definitive map under continuous review and make modifications where it appears that a route should be added, re-graded or deleted.
An officer was appointed in 1997 to undertake the review of Rotherham's rights of way. Significant progress is now being made in the parish by parish review of the borough's network.
