Advice in an Emergency
What to do if a Major Incident occurs
If you find yourself involved in a major incident, you will probably act on your instincts and use common sense. It is however important to:
- Make sure 999 has been called. Don't assume others will do this.
- Ensure you do not put yourself or others in danger.
- Try and remain calm.
- Check for injuries.
- Seek reliable information abut what is happening.
- Follow the advice of the emergency services.
If an incident occurs within close proximity you should:
- Go inside a safe building and stay in until you are advised to do otherwise.
- Tune into local TV or radio for situation updates.
Children at school
Naturally, if children are at school and there is a major incident, you will probably want to collect them as soon as possible. However, it may not be safe to do so. You are advised to tune into the local radio. They will be relaying the arrangements local schools have made for the collection of children.
All schools have plans in place to respond to a major incident and children will be looked after. More information on school emergency planning can be found on www.teachernet.gov.uk/emergenciesBusinesses
Businesses have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of their staff. Many businesses have plans and procedures in place for responding to a major incident. You should find out the arrangements in your place of work. If you are a business and require advice on emergency planning or business continuity, contact the Council's Emergency and Safety team.
