Advice - Fire
Fire is the biggest risk in your home. Please visit the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service website for further information on fire safety in your home.
The following useful tips will help keep you and your family safe:
- Have a smoke alarm. Preferably one per level and batteries should be checked at least once a year.
- Reduce hazards that may cause a fire in your home.
- Try to identify two routes out of each room. Walk through your escape routes with your family, keeping routes clear from obstacles.
- Plan your escape route at night.
- Be aware of where keys are kept for windows and doors.
- Do not smoke in bed.
- Do not leave burning candles unattended.
- Shut doors at night this helps stop fire spreading.
- Do not leave your television or similar items on standby.
In the event of a fire:
- Get everyone together and get out.
- If there is a lot of smoke, crawl along the floor where the air is clearer.
- If a door feels hot, do not open it as it probably means there is a fire on the other side.
- Cover your nose and mouth and cover any exposed skin.
- Stay out.
- Call 999.
- If you can not get out, stay together in one room near an open window to alert rescuers. Push a blanket or similar along the bottom of the door.
- If you are in a public building follow fire evacuation advice such as not using lifts.
